Dog stories are often corny tear-jerkers involving Fluffy putting his paw on his owner’s forearm as said owner passes on. (This signals a bond that spans the interspecies divide!) True, Amazing Gracie: A Dog’s Tale is a tear-jerker, but it also skirts the corniness and the commonness of so many dog tales. Gracie was the unwanted deaf and nearly blind Great Dane pup out of a litter of puppies. She was adopted by Dan Dye, a man in a dead-end job, whose dog had recently died. Gracie inspires Dan and his friend Mark Beckloff to open a bakery for dogs in Kansas City, a shop called Three Dog Bakery that has since spread throughout the country.
