Penguin lovers rejoice! In just a few short weeks, Brown Books Publishing Group releases Penguin-Pedia: Photographs and Facts From One Man's Search for the Penguins of the World by David Salomon. A photographer, writer, and real estate developer from Dallas, Texas, Solomon was inspired by his love of animals in general and penguins in particular to create this book, an exploration of all of the world's seventeen species of penguin. Solomon took photos of penguins in their natural habitats, including many close-up shots, over the course of two summers spent sailing about the southern oceans in search of remote penguin colonies. Included are dozens of photos featuring penguins up close and personal as seen through the eyes of not a professional scientist, but a penguin enthusiast, an everyday somebody with a love and admiration for these spectacular, and endangered, creatures. Though filled with plenty of personal stories outlining the author's own penguin encounters, the book has lots of scientific, well-researched facts and figures to inform and enlighten the reader in search of a broader base of penguin knowledge. Particularly useful to the penguin student are Salomon's comparisons of the different species of penguins, allowing for easy, straightforward insight into the similarities and points of contrast between the seventeen varieties. Solomon also presents a wealth of information about the feeding habits, populations levels, habitats, and reproductive behaviors of penguins, as well as outlining current threats to various colonies and species. Want to know how much the average penguin weighs, or what the differences are between a Rockhopper penguin and a Galapagos penguin? Salomon covers all that and more. Penguin-Pedia is slated for release November 1st, 2011, and is available for pre-order now.
