"Slowly, Slowly, Slowly," said the Sloth

As both a fan of Eric Carle and sloths (my absolute favorite animal), I was delighted to learn that the illustrator had a book out called “Slowly, Slowly, Slowly,” said the Sloth. And the book pays perfect tribute to sloths, as on every single page, the sloth lives slowly…slowly…slowly. He slowly crawls, slowly eats, slowly falls asleep, and slowly wakes up. Everything he does, he does slowly—slowly—slowly.

Farm Animals by Katie Daynes

I’m not much of a fan of farm books, toys, or other items for children that feature farm animals. It’s not that I don’t love baby sheep and cows; it’s that many of these resources present falsehoods to children. I don’t want to say that they lie, because that’s not completely true; there are many family farms that look like these pictures and toy sets, after all. But most of the animals that they consume do not come from these happy-looking farms but from violent factory farms, and those definitely aren’t images I want in my child’s head until she’s old enough to handle them. (Though I do think they’re important to know about, for sure.)
